California Bans Sale of Gas-Powered Lawn Mowers by 2024 https://solartechonline.com/blog/lawn-mowers-ban-2024/ Tue, 04 Jan 2022 06:26:57 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/?p=1258 In an effort to further move the state of California toward a zero-emission future, regulators have approved a measure to phase out the sale of gas-powered lawnmowers and leaf-blowers. Assembly Bill No. 1346, which was voted on last Thursday, requires the state to ban the sale of gas-powered lawnmowers and leaf blowers by 2024. While homeowners and businesses will still be permitted to use this gas-powered equipment, after 2024 they will no longer be able to purchase them.

Why is California doing this?

According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), California is banning the sale of gas-powered lawnmowers by 2024 because operating a commercial one for an hour “emits as much smog-forming pollution as driving the best-selling 2016 passenger car, a Toyota Camry, about 300 miles – approximately the distance from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.”*  Furthermore, CARB concluded that one hour of using a commercial leaf blower is equivalent to driving 1100 miles from LA to Denver!**

California Bans the Sale of Gas-Powered Lawnmowers in 2024

Leaf-blowers and lawnmowers are classified as Small Off-road Engines, or SORES. As of 2017, there were nearly 16.5 million SORE’s in California, which was greater than the 13.7 million light-duty passenger cars in the state. SORE’s are responsible for serious health risks, according to the law’s sponsors, as they emit high levels of reactive organic gases (ROG), particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Not only are these emissions harmful to those operating this equipment, they’re also harmful to neighborhoods and the environment at large.

What does the lawn mower ban mean for you?

As a business or homeowner, it’s time to equip yourself for the electric future. Protecting the welfare of your family and your employees is vital to the success and survival of both your family and business. Not only must you consider the health and safety of those around you, must also consider the costs that come with transitioning to an all-electric future.

How can you combat these new expenses?

With energy rates continuously rising every year, it’s important to consider just how expensive it will be to make the transition from gas-powered machinery to electric. This is more of an immediate concern as it has immediate costs. It’s even more important to consider the long-term costs of this transition, like how are you going to pay to charge all of that equipment?

Energy storage is the answer.

The energy storage solutions offered by SolarTech are designed to help home/business owners combat the egregious expenses of energy use in Southern California. When charging in Southern California, many utilities have programs called on-peak periods or time-of-use rates, that are designed to charge higher electric rates during different times of the day. Energy storage solutions allow you to combat those on-peak times and charge using YOUR own stored energy.

When you are producing your own energy with solar and saving your own energy with energy storage, you can keep the expense of electricity down, while keeping your business running. This might initially seem like a huge blow to your business or even home life, but if you prepare yourself for this future then you’ll be ready for it when it comes.

Go solar today!

SolarTech has been powering California for over 20 years and we are committed to delivering the best possible service to our customers. Our representatives work with you to understand your desires and needs, and to provide the best energy solution for you. We are committed to complete customer satisfaction, which we achieve by offering quality products, professional installation, and outstanding value.

Copper vs Aluminum Backed Cells https://solartechonline.com/blog/copper-vs-aluminum/ Wed, 10 Nov 2021 07:35:47 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/?p=1285

What goes into a solar panel? Are those components good for my home or business?

These are crucial questions to ask when investing in solar and one key thing to consider is what your solar panel cells are made of!

What Makes a Solar Panel?

Solar panels are made of groups of multiple solar cells, or photovoltaic cells (PV), all oriented in one plane. When you look at a solar panel you might notice that they have grids on them, like the one to our right. The individual squares within that grid are your solar cells.

Solar cells are typically made of silicon semiconductors that serve to absorb sunlight and convert that into electricity. There are three types of solar cells each with varying efficiencies.

    1. Single-crystal cells (most efficient and cost effective)

    1. Polycrystalline cells (second most efficient)

    1. Thin film cells (least efficient)

SunPower Residential Roof Mounted Solar Installation

SunPower's Panels are Built with Maxeon Cell Technology for Maximum Efficiency

Copper vs. Aluminum Backed Cells

Copper backed cells are the premium solar cells. The copper backing on the solar cells allows for higher conductivity and cell longevity. Compared to copper, aluminum has just 61 percent of its conductivity! Aluminum also lacks the same resilience as copper, becoming more susceptible to weather damage over time as the cells expand and contract with the changing weather. The strength of copper allows it to withstand the intensities of wear and tear, as opposed to aluminum. Coppers thermal conductivity is also about 60 percent greater than that of aluminum, meaning that copper can remove heat faster than aluminum, helping the system to operate more efficiently. All in all, copper backed cells are better conductors that are built to last and deliver the most bang for your buck.

Now that you know the best type of solar cells out there, where do you go to get these types of solar energy panels?

That’s where SunPower by SolarTech comes in!

The SunPower Difference

As a SunPower master dealer we couldn’t be prouder to offer the best solar energy systems for your home or business. SunPower solar panels are the ONLY solar panels on the market that are built with copper backed cells. Overtime, conventional solar cells lose their power because of corrosion and breakage, but SunPower’s unique design eliminates 85% of the reasons conventional cells fail. Unlike conventional cells, the Maxeon cell technology that constitutes SunPower’s panels add incredible strength, making them virtually impervious to corrosion. Thick connectors in the copper backing of their cells allow them to expand and contract from daily temperature swings with ease. Conventional cells are typically built with thin and week connections, leading them to often fail over time.

Not only that, SunPower is the ONLY solar manufacturer that provides all-in-one systems, meaning that everything from the racking to the solar panels themselves come from SunPower. Other companies outsource their products from other manufacturers, meaning that if anything goes wrong with a competitors’ panels it could take ages to get replacement parts in as there are heaps of hoops to jump through to figure out where to get those parts. SunPower on the other hand manufactures every part of their solar panel systems in house, never outsourcing, meaning that you know EXACTLY who to contact.

If you are considering going solar then look no further than SunPower by SolarTech. Call SolarTech to receive a free solar analysis and start the discussion about adding premium SunPower panels to your home or business.

Solar Monitoring https://solartechonline.com/blog/solar-monitoring/ https://solartechonline.com/blog/solar-monitoring/#respond Thu, 06 May 2021 17:35:37 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/solar-monitoring/ Solar Monitoring Explained

System Down, Not Producing, WiFi Problems, Shaded, Electric Issues, App Not Reporting

Customers tend to misunderstand the way SolarTech monitoring works.
SolarTech is only alerted after the system has been down for 24 hours.  SolarTech normal business hours are 8 am – 4:30 pm Mon. – Fri., once staff is in the office alerts are tended to on a first come first serve basis.  Once the system has been down, we are then alerted, and can schedule a service call to have a technician review the system to find the faults.  We understand clients can be frustrated when scheduling service, sometimes we have calls scheduled out weeks in advance because the service demand at that time is so high.  It is understandable that customers feel upset having to wait in line for service when their products are under warranty.  Just like a normal product process, we must work with our dealer to remedy customer problems.  Sometimes this is software updates, hardware issues or replacements.

The good news is how your solar system is designed to work.  Your solar system is designed to reset as necessary in the event of a power failure or issue with WiFi.  Your solar array is designed to produce energy over-time.  You average out the credits you earn with the amount of energy you use over the year with your true up bill.  Normally a solar system is sized to 100% to about 110% to offset the energy the home of business uses.  This being the case, usually the true up bill credits will average out with the loss of production to come to a zero bill, even if you have had issues with the solar system throughout the year.  The even better news is SunPower has been known to work with customers and if they are at fault will work to remedy the situation and, in some cases, may reimburse if they are at fault.  SolarTech stands behind SunPower products and service.  We love hearing from our clients how much money they are saving from the premium solar array we have installed for their home or businesses.  Be part of the money saving crowd with Solar by SolarTech.

SolarTech is not automatically alerted to down systems or system changes right away to allow for system inaccuracies to happen.  For instance, we are not alerted when the system is shaded abnormally for the day.  Instead, we are alerted after a period of time (24 hours) if the system is still not producing as it should we will then schedule a service call.  Of if WiFi goes down, which happens frequently, we are not instantly alerted, we are alerted after 24 hours.  This allows the system to restart and reconnect to WiFi without producing a service action item for SolarTech.  Since some of the issues tend to self-rectify the situation, there is no need for service to be alerted instantly.  There are also firmware updates which are controlled by SunPower.  These can be done remotely and can take time or be very quick.  We are not told when updates happen from SunPower.  So, when we say SolarTech monitors 24/7, we do, and we are here for service if you need it.  We appreciate the SunPower service structure and work within the confines of the SunPower Service Process as it is set up.

SolarTech customers understand how monitoring of their systems work and continue to provide accolades and approval.
Understanding how premium solar products work in conjunction with service is key to a happy customer relationship.

How Solar Works https://solartechonline.com/blog/how-solar-works/ https://solartechonline.com/blog/how-solar-works/#respond Tue, 13 Oct 2020 16:56:38 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/how-solar-works/ Using Light to Power Your Life – How Solar Works

The Photovoltaic effect – the science of generating electricity with solar panels.

The Solar Process:

  1. The solar cells absorb solar radiation

  2. The suns rays begin to interact with the silicon cell, electrons move creating electric flow

  3. Wires then capture and feed this direct current (DC) to a solar inverter to converted into alternating current (AC) energy

  4. The AC energy is fed into your home or business

  5. A net meter measures electricity usage

If you are producing more energy than you are using, then the power will feed back into the grid.  When this happens, you will receive credits towards your power bill. You can also purchase a solar battery.  A battery will charge from the solar array and will also help in the event there is a power failure.  The battery can be set up to power critical loads or more depending on the power usage and battery count.

If you have a solar system that is not producing enough power, your demand for electricity is higher than your systems production, you will begin to draw power from the power grid as normal.  Solar allows home and business owners to power their lives at a lower cost. When you calculate the savings over a 25 year period compared to rising electric costs, going solar tends to be an easy decision.

Rolling Blackouts https://solartechonline.com/blog/rolling-blackouts/ https://solartechonline.com/blog/rolling-blackouts/#respond Wed, 26 Aug 2020 16:30:34 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/rolling-blackouts/ Flex Alert – Rolling Blackouts

Rolling Blackouts happen when the power demand is greater than the power supply capability of the network.  When the demand is greater than the network can handle, shutdowns can happen on a rolling basis.

SDG&E has been put on alert that we are on the watch list for rolling blackouts due to the high heat.  What does that mean to you?  SDG&E has been put on notice by California ISO (Independent System Operator), that we may experience rolling blackouts.  The blackouts will happen by circuit, each neighborhood is assigned a circuit number. See your circuit here. They will last about an hour and will be put on a rotating schedule.

How can you overcome this power obstacle? Solar+Storage is the best way to help alleviate the stress of blackouts. You will not have to worry about being without power. Your home or business will function seamlessly with Solar+Storage by SolarTech.
