If that’s what’s holding you back, there’s good news.

As of December 2024 the current average cost per watt in San Diego was $2.41. In 2025, there will be a federal tax credit available to cover 30% of the cost of a new clean energy system. It’s called the Residential Clean Energy Credit, and it can make a significant difference in the affordability of a solar system.

With its warm, sunny weather San Diego is a great place for solar panels. Here’s what to consider when determining the cost of a new system and its ongoing operating expenses.

How Are Solar Panel Prices Changing in 2025?

There are a number of factors influencing solar panel system pricing trends in 2025, including advancements in technology, changes to the supply chain, market demand, and government policies. New cell technologies can make a significant difference in how much solar panels cost in the future, and tax credits can add to the value of installing this type of system.

Perovskite cells, for example, offer higher rates for energy conversion, which could translate to a significantly lower cost for usage. When coupled with manufacturing improvements and efficiency gains, solar systems may become more mainstream rather quickly. That could be great news for anyone considering a solar system because it brings these systems into a lower price range that more homeowners can comfortably afford.

The Importance of the Supply Chain

Supply chain developments will also have an affect on pricing in 2025, since global sourcing is a big part of making solar panels and other system components. If there are increased global costs, trade tensions, or other disruptions, the cost of solar panels could climb. However, this may also encourage domestic production of components, which would bring prices down.

If you’re in San Diego and looking into solar panels it’s important to consider all the different ways that pricing for these panels could change in 2025. However, the tax credits are valuable and current prices are reasonable, so taking advantage of those benefits may be the right choice for your current needs. It’s possible that prices will come down in the future, of course, but that’s not a guarantee and you could start taking advantage of your sunny climate in 2025 instead of waiting.

How Much Does a Solar System Cost in San Diego?

The average cost of a solar power system in San Diego ranges from $10,000 to $20,000 for sizes between 3kW and 10kW. Of course, you’ll also want to account for the federal solar tax credit and the way it brings prices down. If you’re saving 30% that could bring your $10,000 solar system down to $7,000, which is a significant savings on such a large purchase.

While there are likely going to be price changes in 2025 it remains to be seen which direction those changes will take. If there are tariffs and trade restrictions that could drive up the prices of solar system components and overall solar panel pricing, at least until more US companies start manufacturing them. However, those restrictions aren’t guaranteed and it’s possible that increased demand and ongoing global manufacturing will mean lower prices for solar system customers.

The quality of the equipment for solar systems, along with the prices for labor and permits, all matter when choosing solar panels. These factors make a difference in the price of the final system. They need to be taken into account along with the tax credit, the $2.41/W market rate for energy, and other issues that can affect the cost of the overall system and its usage.

Factors Influencing Solar Panel Costs

One of the main factors influencing the overall cost of solar panels is the system size. Larger systems simply cost more, but you don’t want to choose a system that’s too small for how you intend to use it. With a solar system that’s not large enough for your home, for example, you won’t see the benefits you expect and may not experience the kind of return you were hoping for.

Equipment Quality

Another impact to the cost of your solar panels is the quality of the equipment. There are premium monocrystalline panels and standard panels, and they come with differences in price. Premium panels cost more upfront, but they generally come with better warranties, more durability, and improved efficiency. Over their lifespan they’ll produce more energy than a standard panel, which can mean increased value even though their original price is higher.

Installation Complexity

Installation is another factor that affects solar system cost. The roof type, its angle, and its height all matter, as some roofs are much easier to work with than others. If you have a flatter roof and a single-story house the installation costs will generally be lower than they would for a two-story home with a steeply pitched roof. Additionally, single roofs, tile roofs, and metal roofs all come with varying degrees of installation cost and complexity.

Additional Cost Considerations

Local permit costs, battery storage, and monitoring systems are all additional solar costs you’ll want to consider when you’re looking into a system. As of 2024, San Diego County was waiving the fees for all residential solar system permits. However, this may change in the future and it’s important to be aware of the potential for increased expenses. The size of the batteries and type of monitoring system you choose will also matter when looking into overall system costs.

What Solar Incentives Are Available in San Diego in 2025?

The biggest incentive for solar system installation in San Diego in 2025 is the federal tax credit, which is a savings of 30% of the installation cost. California also has a net metering program which can help San Diego residents save big, since your unused solar energy will be sent to the power company. You can receive credits for it that you’ll use during the nighttime hours, helping you save even more through the benefits of a solar system.

There are also local California solar incentives including the Single-family Affordable Solar Homes (SASH) program, the CSI solar rebate program for affordable, multifamily housing, a program that offers rebates for solar water heaters, and the New Solar Homes Partnership (NSHP) for home builders.

Your property tax also generally won’t increase when you add a solar system, even if it raises the value of your home, so you don’t have to worry about paying more in taxes due to energy upgrades.

How Much Can You Save with Solar in San Diego?

Everyone’s savings is different, but you can slash your energy bills when you switch to solar panels. Over 25 years, for example, you can expect a 5kW solar system to save you more than $84,000 in energy cost savings. It’s important to note that electricity rates rarely go down, and tend to rise over time. You may be able to save even more than projected, depending on how much energy you use and whether rates increase more rapidly than expected.

Because you have upfront costs when you choose solar it’s important to understand your ROI and payback period. Generally, a payback period for a solar system is around five to seven years, after which the system will have paid for itself and you’ll see a stronger return on the solar investment you made. While maintenance costs will still be involved, these costs are typically minor and won’t cut into your ROI too strongly.

Is Solar Worth It in San Diego in 2025?

San Diego is known for its high electricity rates, and solar can help offset these costs. Additionally, the abundant sunshine in the area means your solar panels will have plenty to work with as they create energy for your home. Despite the initial investment in a solar system the long-term financial benefits can be significant. If you’re not sure about making the move to solar, don’t let the upfront costs stop you. Over time you’ll recoup those costs and much more.

Environmental impacts are another important consideration for solar energy. When you reduce your carbon footprint it’s easier on the planet, and that can be a rewarding and valuable reason to switch to solar. The sun provides plenty of energy for the planet and you can take advantage of that without any increased pollution or stress on the earth. Choosing solar is a great way to do your part to help the planet continue while using a nearly infinite natural resource and saving money on your power bill, all at the same time.

How to Choose the Right Solar System Size

Choosing the right solar system size for your household is critical. You don’t want to have a system that’s too small or it won’t be able to do what you want. However, there’s no reason to invest in a system that’s too large for your home, because your batteries can only provide a certain amount of energy storage. The rest will be sent to the power company, but there are limits to that, as well. You don’t want to waste the potential energy your solar panels are collecting when the right size system will offer the balance you’re looking for.

When you look at systems of different sizes, though, it’s not just about the kWh usage on your electric bill. It’s also about the roof space you have available, whether there’s any shade, and the way your roof is oriented when compared with the sun’s path through the sky. You also need to consider future needs, especially if you plan to remain in your home for a long time.

Adding onto your home or purchasing electric vehicles may mean you need a larger system. The best way to ensure that you’re getting what you need from your solar system is to work with a professional. That helps you feel more confident and also reduces the chances that the system won’t fit your requirements.

Tips for Maximizing Solar Savings in 2025

To maximize your solar savings in 2025, select high-efficiency panels and inverters. Also, consider a battery storage system that gives you increased energy dependence. With good battery storage you’ll be able to keep more of the energy your panels produce, so you don’t have to rely on the electricity grid as much. That can help you make the most of your solar panels, for maximum value.

Understanding the available incentives can also help you maximize your savings, because you can time the installation to capitalize on these incentives as much as possible. Once your system is installed you also need to maintain it, because that will give you optimal performance for as long as possible. Most homeowners contract out their solar panel maintenance in order to make sure it’s done right and reduce any danger to themselves in the process. You don’t want to take the chance of falling off the roof while rinsing your panels.

The Impact of Dirty Solar Panels and Debris

When dirty solar panels accumulate dirt and debris, they block sunlight from reaching the photovoltaic cells. This obstruction can lead to a decrease in energy output by as much as 20%. By keeping your panels clean, you ensure that they capture the maximum amount of sunlight possible, thereby increasing their efficiency. Moreover, certain types of debris, such as bird droppings, can cause more than just a reduction in efficiency. They can lead to permanent damage if not removed promptly, as they may contain acidic substances that can corrode the panel surface. In addition to bird droppings, other organic materials like leaves and tree sap can create a sticky residue that attracts more dirt and grime, compounding the problem. This can create a vicious cycle where dirty panels lead to decreased efficiency, which in turn leads to more dirt accumulation. Therefore, regular cleaning is not just a maintenance task; it is a crucial step in preserving the integrity and functionality of your solar energy system. Regular maintenance, including professional cleaning and inspections, is crucial to preserving the integrity and functionality of your solar energy system.

Weather Conditions and Their Effects

Different weather conditions can have varying effects on the cleanliness of solar panels. For instance, areas with frequent rain may experience natural cleaning, but this is not always sufficient. Dust storms, pollen, and pollution can all contribute to a layer of grime that rain alone cannot remove. In regions prone to snow, the accumulation can block sunlight entirely. While snow typically slides off panels due to their angle, heavy snowfall may require manual removal to restore functionality. Additionally, extreme weather events such as hailstorms can cause physical damage to solar panels, necessitating not only cleaning but also inspections for potential repairs. Understanding the local climate and its impact on solar panel maintenance is essential for homeowners and businesses alike. Title 24: Solar & Energy Storage Rules for New California Developments https://solartechonline.com/blog/what-is-title-24/ Thu, 18 May 2023 07:24:55 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/?p=1277 In 2023, California updated its Title 24 building energy efficiency standards to require all new residential and commercial buildings to be solar-ready and to have energy storage systems installed. These new requirements are part of California’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reach its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045.

What is Title 24?

Title 24 is a set of building energy efficiency standards adopted by the California Energy Commission (CEC). Title 24 is updated every three years to reflect new technologies and energy efficiency trends. These requirements include HVAC systems, lighting, energy efficiency measures, building envelope, and water heating.

What are the new solar and energy storage requirements for multi-family housing?

The latest Title 24 regulations are the following:

  • Low-rise multifamily buildings must have solar zones covering at least 15% of the total roof area, excluding skylights. These solar zones can be situated on the roof, building overhangs, or overhangs of nearby structures within a 250-foot radius. This requirement applies to structures with mixed occupancy as well, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
  • For low-rise multifamily buildings with interior common areas, occupant sensors must control up to 20% of the floor area, optimizing energy usage in these shared spaces.
  • The updated lighting requirements entail several key provisions. Permanent labels indicating maximum rate wattage must be prominently displayed. Each room should have independent manual controls for personalized lighting adjustments. Moreover, multi-level lighting control options and improved shutoff controls, including occupant sensors, automatic time switches, and similar devices, are mandated.
  • Multi-family buildings are now required to incorporate on-site renewable energy systems. This necessitates developers to offset approximately 50-60% of both the building and tenant’s total energy consumption, promoting sustainable practices and reducing reliance on non-renewable sources.
  • A battery is now required alongside solar PV systems, with its size determined by the size of the solar system.

By adhering to these updated guidelines, low-rise multifamily buildings can enhance their energy efficiency, embrace renewable energy, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

What are the new solar and energy storage requirements for industrial and commercial?

California’s Title 24 has implemented new provisions impacting industrial and commercial projects permitted since Jan. 1, 2023. SolarTech can help navigate these regulations and showcase the benefits of solar and energy storage on your property.

Key provisions include:

  • The mandate for photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage
  • PV systems must meet approximately 60% of buildings’ electricity loads based on factors such as conditioned floor area, climate zone, and building type.
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) charging requirements, including EV-capable spaces and chargers. Larger parking lots must have EV chargers installed, with the percentage varying based on size.
  • Battery storage is now required alongside solar PV systems for all new constructions, with the size of the battery’s storage system determined by the size of the solar system.

How to comply with the new Title 24 requirements

There are several ways to comply with the new Title 24 requirements. One option is to work with SolarTech who is familiar with the requirements and install the required amount accordingly. Another option is to monetize energy as the Landlord, described below.

How to generate revenue with solar

These requirements present opportunities for monetizing the energy transition. Industrial and multi-family owners can benefit by offering discounted power to tenants, effectively increasing net operating income and creating an added recurring revenue stream. By installing solar to offset tenant usage, the landlord becomes the energy producer for the property.

Through tenant billing and Virtual Net Metering (VNEM), owners can allocate billing credits based on individual tenant consumption, making it financially advantageous for both single-tenant and multi-tenant scenarios.

By embracing these requirements and exploring innovative solutions, building owners and developers can not only comply with regulations but also unlock financial benefits and contribute to a sustainable future.

SolarTech provides turnkey solutions in solar, energy storage, and EV charging stations. From compliance with Title 24 to providing tailor-made financing options, our experts partner with owners on all their renewable energy needs. Get in contact with one of our experts today. We’ll make sure you project is Title 24 compliant.

Copper vs Aluminum Backed Cells https://solartechonline.com/blog/copper-vs-aluminum/ Wed, 10 Nov 2021 07:35:47 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/?p=1285

What goes into a solar panel? Are those components good for my home or business?

These are crucial questions to ask when investing in solar and one key thing to consider is what your solar panel cells are made of!

What Makes a Solar Panel?

Solar panels are made of groups of multiple solar cells, or photovoltaic cells (PV), all oriented in one plane. When you look at a solar panel you might notice that they have grids on them, like the one to our right. The individual squares within that grid are your solar cells.

Solar cells are typically made of silicon semiconductors that serve to absorb sunlight and convert that into electricity. There are three types of solar cells each with varying efficiencies.

    1. Single-crystal cells (most efficient and cost effective)

    1. Polycrystalline cells (second most efficient)

    1. Thin film cells (least efficient)

SunPower Residential Roof Mounted Solar Installation

SunPower's Panels are Built with Maxeon Cell Technology for Maximum Efficiency

Copper vs. Aluminum Backed Cells

Copper backed cells are the premium solar cells. The copper backing on the solar cells allows for higher conductivity and cell longevity. Compared to copper, aluminum has just 61 percent of its conductivity! Aluminum also lacks the same resilience as copper, becoming more susceptible to weather damage over time as the cells expand and contract with the changing weather. The strength of copper allows it to withstand the intensities of wear and tear, as opposed to aluminum. Coppers thermal conductivity is also about 60 percent greater than that of aluminum, meaning that copper can remove heat faster than aluminum, helping the system to operate more efficiently. All in all, copper backed cells are better conductors that are built to last and deliver the most bang for your buck.

Now that you know the best type of solar cells out there, where do you go to get these types of solar energy panels?

That’s where SunPower by SolarTech comes in!

The SunPower Difference

As a SunPower master dealer we couldn’t be prouder to offer the best solar energy systems for your home or business. SunPower solar panels are the ONLY solar panels on the market that are built with copper backed cells. Overtime, conventional solar cells lose their power because of corrosion and breakage, but SunPower’s unique design eliminates 85% of the reasons conventional cells fail. Unlike conventional cells, the Maxeon cell technology that constitutes SunPower’s panels add incredible strength, making them virtually impervious to corrosion. Thick connectors in the copper backing of their cells allow them to expand and contract from daily temperature swings with ease. Conventional cells are typically built with thin and week connections, leading them to often fail over time.

Not only that, SunPower is the ONLY solar manufacturer that provides all-in-one systems, meaning that everything from the racking to the solar panels themselves come from SunPower. Other companies outsource their products from other manufacturers, meaning that if anything goes wrong with a competitors’ panels it could take ages to get replacement parts in as there are heaps of hoops to jump through to figure out where to get those parts. SunPower on the other hand manufactures every part of their solar panel systems in house, never outsourcing, meaning that you know EXACTLY who to contact.

If you are considering going solar then look no further than SunPower by SolarTech. Call SolarTech to receive a free solar analysis and start the discussion about adding premium SunPower panels to your home or business.

Being a SunPower Master Dealer https://solartechonline.com/blog/sunpower-master-dealer/ https://solartechonline.com/blog/sunpower-master-dealer/#respond Tue, 02 Nov 2021 16:55:02 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/sunpower-master-dealer/ What it means to be a SunPower Master Dealer

SolarTech is a Proud SunPower Master Dealer

We partnered with SunPower to become one of the few Elite Master Dealers of SunPower in California. This means that we have the privilege of being one of the few places in California where you can purchase SunPower solar panels. Partnering with SunPower was a no-brainer.

Their panels are built to weather any storm and perform at peak efficiency. Compared to conventional solar panels, SunPower panels outperform the average efficiency and they do so with longevity in mind. SunPower solar panels are built to last, which is why we trust installing this brand for our customers. There are very few all-in-one solar panel service providers and SunPower is one of them. Everything that goes into their solar energy systems is manufactured by SunPower. From the racking to the panels and inverters, the entirety of the solar energy system comes from SunPower, which means if you ever have an issue, you know exactly who to call.

Other solar companies get their parts from multiple manufacturers, meaning that if you have trouble with their installation, it could potentially take an unknown amount of time to have your solar energy system serviced. If and when an issue arises, your installer will have to contact multiple manufacturers for parts. This can extend the timeline for your service, creating complications and unnecessary work, not to mention higher electric bills.  If SunPower is at fault for the service issue they will reimburse your for your electricity while your are down for service.  With supply chain issues continuing to run rampant into 2021, relying on assistance from someone who relies on parts from someone else is very impractical and can lead to even greater concerns. When you invest in SunPower you’re investing in ONE reliable and trusty solar supplier.

Intelligent Design

We are proud to be a SunPower Master Dealer because their solar panels improve curb appeal and do so with power. Not all roofs are equal and not everyone has a roof that can’t be viewed from the street, so when you’re investing in solar it’s important to take into consideration how those solar panels will impact the curb appeal of your home. SunPower solar panels are constructed with Maxeon cell technology.  The connection points, solid metal backing and lack of grid lines create a better curb appeal wherever they are.  Not only do the cells on their solar panels look sharp, they’re also built smart!

Unlike conventional cells, the Maxeon cells that make up SunPower have a solid copper backing that adds incredible strength, making them virtually impervious to corrosion. Conventional cells offer little to no strength and lose power over time as they crack and succumb to temperature swings. Their cells are built to last and withstand changing temperature environments. Thick connectors in the copper backing of their cells allow the cells to expand and contract from daily temperature swings with ease. Conventional cells are typically built with thin and week connections, leading them to often fail over time.

All-in-One System

As we’ve mentioned, another incredible benefit about SunPower is that their solar panel systems are all-in-one, meaning the racking, the panels, inverters and everything else that goes into installing their solar systems comes from SunPower.

SunPower’s 25-Year Warranty

SunPower is built to last, offering industry leading warranties where they cover your system for 25 years! Most solar panel providers only offer a measly 10-year warranty for their panels. Not only that, but most conventional solar warranties only cover parts of your solar system. SunPower offers one warranty that covers your entire solar energy system.

Why go with SunPower?

There are plenty of reasons to go solar and PLENTY of reasons to go solar with SunPower. SolarTech has been powering California for 20 years and we don’t put our faith in any run-of-the-mill solar panels. Becoming a SunPower Master Dealer was like a match-made in heaven. Their product offers superior design, incredible efficiency and an unbelievable warranty. We can also trust that if anything goes wrong, getting serviced will be simple and easy. If you are going solar you should go with SunPower installed by SolarTech.

Ground and Roof Mounted Solar – Which is right for me? https://solartechonline.com/blog/ground-vs-roof-solar/ https://solartechonline.com/blog/ground-vs-roof-solar/#respond Tue, 26 Oct 2021 20:33:43 +0000 https://solartechonline.com/ground-vs-roof-solar/ Solar Ground Mounts vs. Solar Roof Mounts

In many ways, Solar is as simple as installing a solar array to start taking advantage of the free energy the sun provides, but when you go solar, you must consider HOW you’re going to go Solar. Will you go with roof-mounted solar to optimize your space and make the most of the property that you have, or will you opt for ground-mounted solar to take advantage of the positioning freedom that isn’t afforded to roof-mounted systems?

No matter the mounting option you decide to go with, there is an abundance of benefits that come from going solar that are not exclusive to the type of mount you install; however, it is important that you make an educated decision that is best for the needs of your home or business. We’ll be looking at the advantages and disadvantages of ground-mounted solar arrays compared to roof-mounted solar arrays, and at the end of this article, you should have all of knowledge you need to make a decision for your upcoming solar project.

Ground Mount:
Roof Mount:

A Quick Comparison:

Ground-mounted systems take up a bit more space and require a sizable amount of property available to dedicate toward your panels, but they also offer easy access for installation and repair. Roof-mounted systems are less expensive as they utilize the existing roof as a foundation for installation. When you use your roof, you eliminate the need to take up precious property space for your solar installation, however, you are limited to the space that you have. When you install a ground-mounted system, you have the freedom to orient your solar panels in a way that maximizes your energy production, which isn’t necessarily afforded to roof-mounted systems due to roof obstructions.

Benefits of Ground Mounted Solar Systems:

The greatest freedom offered by ground mounts is the flexibility of placement. When you install ground-mounted systems you can align your panels to get as much sun as possible and the more sun you have, the more energy you’ll be producing. Ground-mounted systems produce optimal performance that outmatches rooftop systems, largely because of this. Another great advantage of a ground-mounted system is the ease of access it provides.

Instead of requiring a team to scale your home whenever you’re first installing your system or later when you’re upgrading/repairing the system, everything is on the ground and far easier to access. Having that ease makes upgrading your system in the future far less labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Ground mounts also make it simpler to clean your solar panels. Cleaning your system regularly is important. Dust, dirt, smog and sand can accumulate over time and affect the efficiency of your solar panels. Having your system on the ground eases the cleaning process and doesn’t necessarily require a team to do the work for you.

Benefits of  Roof Mounted Solar Systems:

When space on your property is a constraint, then rooftop-mounted solar is an excellent choice. Roof mounts make use of the foundation that is already available to you. You won’t have to construct another structure on your property to house your solar panels, making rooftop-mounted systems less expensive. Installing a roof-mounted system also frees up precious space on your property that would have otherwise gone to solar.

Roof-mounted systems are also less expensive. You don’t have to create a racking system to house your solar panels, so the upfront cost is typically less than that of a ground-mounted system. Less metal = less costs. You’re working with a pre-existing structure which means you won’t have to purchase costly materials like poles or concrete, and you won’t have to have your soil surveyed before installing. Roof-mounted systems can be both more convenient and more affordable than ground-mounted systems.

Things to Consider When Making your Decision on Solar:

Ground Mounted

· Requires open property space for installation

· More expensive upfront cost

· More labor intensive

· Can be less aesthetically pleasing than roof-mounted system

Roof Mounted

· Difficult to repair, replace and restore

· Difficult to access

· Installer is limited to the space on their rooftop

· Roof holes lead to leak potential

· Potential to reroof

What is best for me?

Whichever solar energy solution you opt for is a good choice, but it’s important that you make the best decision for your home or business. If you are limited on space and looking to spend less up-front then roof-mounted solar is the way to go. If you have the property to spare and are looking for the most efficient solar energy solution, then ground-mounted systems are definitely your best bet.

Whichever system you decide to go with, our team at SolarTech is happy to help get you the information you need to get the job done. With over 20 years of experience in solar, we’re experts who ensure that every project receives the focused attention it deserves.
